TAMPOPO (1985)
Directed by Juzo Itami
114 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles

Tampopo begins with a pair of truck drivers, (an experienced one named Goro and a young sidekick named Gun) who happen onto a decrepit roadside fast food stop selling ramen noodles. The business is not doing too well, and after getting involved in a fight, the heroes decide to help the widowed owner, Tampopo, turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle soup making".

Woven into this main story are a number of smaller stories about the importance of food, including a gangster who mixes wild sex with food. When the film first came out the publicity for the film called it "the first Noodle Western" (in contrast with the Spaghetti Westerns made with Clint Eastwood in Italy in the 70s).

This "multiple plot" film goes seamlessly into many directions without ever feeling disjoint or unconcentrated, and writer-director Juzo Itami manages to infuse Tampopo (which means "dandelion") with a sense of Japanese joie de vivre that is exquisitely exhilarating. In fact I know a few people who are actually addicted to this little gem!
