BLACK CAT WHITE CAT

(Црна мачка, бели мачор; Crna mačka, beli mačor) 1998
Directed by Emir Kusturica
124 minutes
In Serbo-Croat with English subtitles

A romantic comedy from the director of 'Underground' and 'Arizona Dream'. Emir Kusturica's 'Black Cat White Cat', Silver Lion Winner at the Venice Film Festival 1998, is a riotous mix of chaos, love affairs and crime. Set within a community of gypsies, its a story of criminal dealings, romance, revenge, double- and triple-crossings, shotgun weddings, and sudden magical moments.

The story follows Zare, a guy who is in love with beautiful Ida. The problem is that his crooked father Matko, having botched up a black market deal, intends to marry him off to the sister of a powerful gangster. Filmed on the banks of the beautiful blue Danube this colourful comedy is crammed with spectacle, insanity and wonderful gypsy music. Besides all this, the film is also full of nostalgia....a longing for a time when such untamed wildness still existed. A time when music and adventure were part of everyday life. It's the cinematic equivalent of a wild party -- loud, boisterous, violent, and charming....an adrenalin shot of gypsy life.

This is all set to a hell of a great soundtrack composed of gypsy guitars, fiddles, accordions and all manor of horns.
