CinemanitaDARK CITY (1998)
Directed by Alex Proyas
111 minutes
In English
This
is a philosophical sci-fi cult film which aesthetically continues the
imagery of Blade Runner- the idea of a dark deteriorating future
metropolis (partially inspired by German expressionism). In this film the dark, wet
and dirty streets of the city really help to create an
atmosphere of loathing and suffocation. The visual style of the film is
so striking and overwhelming that the aesthetics tend to dwarf the "message" of the film. Some people will just go along for
the ride, without thinking too much about its implications.
In this case the implications are about "time" and "memory"....
relevant issues to anyone who lives in our present gadget-ridden modern
world. Have you noticed how computers are suppose to save time, but
actually they eat it up, and that people have less "free" time than
ever before? Have you noticed how people are losing their sense of
history, so that can no longer relate to anything but the
"now"? Have you noticed that people have problems remembering anything
anymore? If you don't have any idea what I'm talking about, then hell, maybe you are actually already living in this movie
and therefore you don't have to see it!
When the director presented his cut of the film, the studio said it
would have to be re-cut, because it needed to be "dumbed down" so that
it could reach a larger audience. Needless to say we are going to un-dumb it back up and will be screening
the much better original directors cut, which wasn't ever screened in the cinemas.
This is a film which must be seen on a big screen. With William
Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and the stunning Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for
a Dream, Phenomena).
